UPPER BODY PLYOMETRICS
We will do box jumps until we are blue in the face, but when it comes to the upper body we just stick with 3x10 bench press, hit some arms, maybe some banded rotator cuff stuff, and call it a day.
Why did plyometrics and power based exercises suddenly become not important for the upper body?
If you are expecting some shoulder presses and banded rotator cuff exercises to prepare you for the demands of hitting the ground after a tackle, catching yourself after a takedown, spiking a volleyball, or throwing gas you are sorely mistaken.
Sure those other things can help, but if we are not exposing the upper body to COLLISIONS where it is forced to absorb and produce force then we are missing a big piece of the pie.
Exposing the upper body to collisions seems dumb until you realize just how many collisions you expect your upper body to withstand through the course of your sport.
When you frame your training around the idea of using the gym to prepare you for the demands of your sport - your whole training lens changes.
Added bonus, I have found plyometrics to really increase my bench press for all the meatheads here AND everyone in the gym looks at you weird.
Level up your training with some upper body plyometrics! Give these a try and let me know what you think.
